Hi, I have a Sabb single cylinder G type engine with the variable pitch prop fitted in my boat. I have a problem with the engine not reaching full power when under load. It revs really well when in "neutral". but select forward or reverse position on the prop, then it only revs to about half throttle position. from half throttle to full there is no increase in revs or power. It only achieves about 4 knots instead of 6 it is supposed to do in this boat. The engine does not black smoke. I have checked exhaust is clear, fitted new fuel filter and cleaned the fuel lines and tank, had the injector professionally checked, and am now looking to check the injection pump. Not being that mechanical, I am a little hesitant at trying to remove the pump as the governor control etc seems to be attached through the side cover I am told must be removed so that the pump can be removed. Has anyone had experience of removing one of these pumps, anything in particular to watch out for. Better still any thoughts on what the problem could be? Any help gratefully received. I do not know how the engine performed before, as I bought the boat as a project and have only just got her seaworthy, and now trying to sort engine. Thanks |

I had a 8hp Sabb with the variable pitch prop. Had the same problem. Try not to fully pitch the prop. I made a special locking mechinism, so that you can keep it at any pitch you want, becuse it tends to "walk" to fully pitch. Don't know why. I hope that helps. Scott Cain |

Hello Kwackera In the back of the engine there is a lid over a conection to the aksel for the prop. I think it says SABB on the lid, four screws. Open this and you find a circular conectionplate with four nuts on - thigten this so much you feel is rigth. this you should do each year. then you will be able to give full trottle. all the best - Frode Norway |

Hi, I have a Sabb 8hp single cylinder on my boat. I bought it about a month ago and it was running before and after i bought it, since then I have repaired a leaky exhaust manifold, replaced oil and fuel filters, cleaned out fuel tank, done valve clearences and bled it to death! Now that the boat is in the water it will fire up but only run for about 5 seconds then die. Has anyone ever experienced this problem before? It seems like a fuel problem to me but the fuel system is all tight, clean diesel and a serviced injector. any pointers to what the problem could be would be appreciated. |

Dave MacDonald: I have a Sabb 2H. Check the screen on the lift pump. Suggest you put the standard hand squeeze in-line pump you see on outboard motor tanks- This eliminates bleeding. The hand pump will tell you if you have a problem before the injector pump. Also it is invaluable when you are motor sailing and boat is heeled over too much to get effective pull. Also suggest you add an old fashion glass screen filter ( 50-100 microns) before your fuel filter. ( You can still get them at a tractor supply shop) |

Sabb 2 H hand crank starter. I recently bought a spare 2H engine. Unlike the one on my Atkins Schooner, the spare has the hand crank in tack. Has anyone over 50 years old been able to get their 2 H started from the hand crank in non summer months? Maybe I need to eat more spinach ! |
