I have 1.5 diesel engine in 21' seafarer21. Top speed is blistering 4/5 knots.

Cooling is provided by a jabsco pump that sends raw sea water through a bowman bl180 heat exchanger.

The bowman also collects exhaust gas.

When the engine is not in gear the temprature rises gentally to 80 deg and stays there.

Under load (in gear) cruising at 4/5 knots it uses quite a bit of coolant fluid and the temprature exceeds 110 deg.

Is this a symptom of a head gasket problem?

Or any other suggestions.

Thanks

Hi,
It sounds to me that there are a few things to look at: 1. Assuming the system is supposed to be sealed, is it losing pressure under running conditions (e.g. the seal on the filler cap?) 2. Is there any partial blockage or restriction in the plumbing either side of the pump? 3. Is the pump being driven at its optimal speed when underway. 4. Is the the pump really up to the task of proiding sufficient water when the motor is under way? Cheers

Thanks for the advice.
I'm sure its not the cap on the Bowman as I have changed this.
I suspected the water pump, so I removed it and inspected it, looked fine, but it may be to small for the job as you say.
The water ways in the engine are clear as I drained the coolant from the tap on the engine and it ran fine.
I might try this again

thank for your suggestions
