This just in from Mark Stretch in Australia:

Just got back from the estate audtion of Colin Wear. Colin was a well known collector of old machinery(mostly steam, stationary and automotive but some marine).
One of the lots was the Swan, a restored 1897 boat with a Union engine. I have attached some photos and a page describing the Swan from the catalogue.
Unfortunately access and photo opportunities were limited unless you were a keen buyer with lots of cash. I'm keen but with the highest lot of the day fetching $62,500.00 AUD for a Fowler traction engine well the cash is a problem.
Certainly the most expensive auction I have been to but with buyers from all over Australia and overseeas it was to be expected.
BTW the Swan sold for $28,000.00 and the S.L. Wear for $38,000.00.
Fortunately I managed(amongst very spirited bidding) to pick up Colin's collection of marine inboard adds, brochures, manuals and warranty cards. There are around 400 pieces covering Blaxland, CLAE, Simplex, Hall, Vinco, Tasman, Stuart, Chapman, Invincible etc. In particular the Blaxland, Vinco, Invincible and Simplex brochures are very complete with quite a few unknown
engines appearing.

They got their macks a bit fuddled in the blurb about the good ship Swan's machinery (qv). Union and Standard were quite different were they not? Nice little boat though. That engine would probably shake the fillings out of your teeth on a long run though. Mark, there was a Simpson Strickland steam engine on sale. Please can you drop me a line? Regards Russell. |
