Hi Tony, From an approximately 1920 Universal Flexifour "Instructions for Installing and Operating and Repair List" manual the valve stem/tappet clearance should be from .006-.008". I am also interested in learning about Engine sump capacity, dipstick gauge details (height),oil grade. My Flexifour is serial #C2326 which I date at 1916-18. Good Luck, Ted |

In 1953 I helped my father rebuild and install a Universal Marine 4 cylinder engine that was purchased as war surplus. It was supposedly from a navy lifeboat. I remember all the details of removing the inspection plates on the water jackets, removing the head, and thoroughly cleaning the accumulated rust, and cleaning the oil cooler. We had to replace the cast iron supply line to the exhaust manifold as it was almost completely plugged. I am curious about this engine, since it functioned faithfully on many fishing trips pushing our antique 24 ft raised deck cabin cruiser at the sedate speed of about 7 knots. If anyone knows a source for the history of this engine please email me. |
