I have a Michigan Steel Boat Engine complete except for the exhaust chamber. I purchased a another engine in poor condition that has the part I need. My Michigan has the original swing timer on it. Hope to someday restore it. My water pump strap is there but badly worn. It has the original tag as well and looks just like Bill's pictures. It has a mixer instead of the Schebler.

Bill,

Thanks for posting the photos. I have been waiting for a good example like this to show up.

Richard, It does look like a T&M judging by the timer lever, condenser manifold and the two piece water pump arm.

This engine could have been installed in a Michigan Steel Boat back when C.G. Bullard and his brother owned and managed the company located in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the late 1800's. Frederick E. Wadsworth purchased MSBC December of 1901 and moved the company to Detroit, 1250 East Jefferson Ave.

Audie, I think this engine has the original timer lever. I have seen a few other early T&M's that had this same style round timer lever. Do you have any photos of your MSBC engine you could post or email me?

The patent number on the brass tag is the same number as I have seen on all the MSBC tags that were on engines. The patent is for their steel hull design, not the engine.

Here are pictures of a Michigan Steel Boat.
It is located north of Orillia , Ontario.
It's been (more or less) well taken care of - new ribs a number of years ago etc).
It was supposed to have been sold, but the buyer didn't show up.
A "project boat" for sure, but it offers a very good starting point for a restoration.

I really like the fantail stern - looks nice but provides not much in the way of floatation.

ps - my own fantail launch hit the water 2 weeks ago - and actually floated - pictures and videos coming up soon.

Miro,

Thanks for posting the pic's and video. A real rare treat to see one of the MSBC boats no matter what condition it is in.

Called a Automobile Boat because of the steering wheel located at the bow of the boat and the Detroit reverse gear box installed.

Just to nit pick . . . the literature mentions a reversible engine not a gear box.

Spencer,

You are exactly correct my mistake, I guess I had Detroit reverse gear on my mind because a fellow collector and restorer just emailed me some photos of a Detroit gear that he had rebuilt. I would have to go back through all my old literature but I think I remember reading somewhere that the reverse gear was actually a option you had to order. I tried to go back and edit the mistake but the forum will not allow me to do this for some reason.
