I HAVE AN EARLY MODEL 4-62 ENGINE #72717 GRAY PHANTOM. THE CARB IS A DOWNDRAFT MADE BY FORD. THE HEAD MARKINGS ARE 400A, PG. THE AUTOLITE DISTRIBUTOR #1GB4201A 3 S MOUNTS ON TOP OF HEAD. THE ENGINE BLOCK MARKINGS ARE G400A, 431B, E8V. THE LIFT RING #D4418, MOTOR MOUNT # G4-49. MY QUESTION IS WHAT IS THE ENGINE MAKE??? I HAVE A 4-75 GRAY PHANTOM THAT IS A CONTINENTAL ENGINE. THE 4-62 HAS NO ID TAG. I WANT TO REBUILD THIS ENGINE AND NEED A STARTING POINT. THANKS |

Hi Elmer. To the best of my knowledge, your 4-62 should be a Continental also. Gray used Continental from the 20's on up. There were a couple of "model" changes made by Cont. throughout their manufacturing history but all basically the same. You mentioned that there wasn't any I.D. tag; where was the S/N and the 4-62 found ? Your single downdraft Ford carb doesn't sound original. What year is your 4-75? I am looking for either size for my restoration. Would you consider selling before you rebuild? |
