There are lots of posts on this site regarding cleaning/polishing of brass and bronze. Being something of a purist, I prefer to not polish these metals unless the engine's overall finish has already been compromised. Needless to say, new brass/bronze screws and other repair parts look quite out of place on an old engine with otherwise original surfaces. Does anyone know of a way to approximate the honey brown patina of old brass/bronze using readily available materials? |

To give it a patina try amonia or as the artist do use liver of sulphur. |

Thanks for responding jw and jb. I looked under the laundry sink, and, sure enough, Mama has some ammonia left over from her wool dyeing days. I will experiment with that first. Liver of sulfer sounds like something from medieval times when a few pinches of bat hair and eye of newt were considered modern chemistry. Sure enough though, it popped right up on a Google search as available from an art supply house. It is inexpensive, it costs more to ship 4 ounces of it than the product itself costs. If the ammonia doesn't do it, I will experiment with liver of sulfur. Thanks. P.S. Notice the ads in the side bar on this page. Software picked up on search words like liver of sulfur, etc., and up pop corresponding ads. While I know every move we make on the internet is available to anyone who is interested, its still spooky. |

Who'd a thought sulphur even had a liver. My friends in the fertilizer plant told me long ago that brass didn't hold up in the ammonia. I wanted to age some bright himges, had to use paint remover to remove the clear finish, the ammonia dulled them quickly. |
