Just taking a stab here knowing that english speaking countries around the world can have words that have their own colloquial meanings.
The very early engines had a valve to vaporize the fuel and they were commonly known as Generator valves, about 1905 with the advent of fuel valves with floats they became known as carburetors.

Generator valves were the common name for any of these devices and there was also a company by the name Generator Valve Company that mfgd generator valves and carburetors as the
technology advanced.

Ferro started mfging in 1905 and designed and made their own carburetors ( with a float)
