I am restoring a boat built in 1936 powered by a Ford Flathead with a Joes Gearbox. The only identification on the box are the numbers 322 and 328 cast on the underside. The gearbox is in good condition. Forward and neutral seem to have detents but reversing requires that the shift lever be held in position. The gearbox does not have a forward seal. The current engine is a 48 Mercury conversion but the original engine was a 36 Ford and I assume gearbox dates from 36 or prior. Questions: Can the model number be derived from the casting marks? What is the proper lubricant for this gearbox? What is the maximum rated hoursepower? Does anyone have the technical maintenance data or source of same for the gearbox? Thanks for the help. dmm Chelan, WA |

Hello Don - here is a little help. I have a 1928 era Mianus two cylinder engine with a Joes Gear box. It too has detents for forward and neutral but must be held in place for reverse. That was probably a safety feature. What happens inside is a multi-disc clutch is engaged while in reverse that clamps the carrier on a planet gear and that reverses the output of the gear box. Can't help at all with a model number as mine has Mianus on the cover. Bob Price |

Thanks Bob. I obtained a copy of the instructions for setting up and adjusting a Joes 322F Gearbox from a kind gentleman in the UK. Don |
