I've only recently discovered this website and discussion board and it has been a huge help, but i was wondering if anyone might be able to give me some more specific tips on what to tackle on my P-60. I recently replaced the fuel tank because the old one was extremely corroded and delivering some terrible fuel which led me to removing and cleaning the carburetor and fuel pump (I reused all the original parts). Since then it has not started. All the carburetor settings are at the reccomended starting point. I verified the timing and point gaps, everything seemed ok, But I did notice the spark looked a little weak. As far as I know nothing has been replaced in some time. What should I take on first? Any info would be great. Thanks |

Are you getting any gas when you choke the engine. I would suggest that too often people clean the carburetor but don't blow compressed air into the inlet float valve to make sure there is no build up of gunk in the inlet just above the float valve seat. This area often seems to catch a lot of gunk and it gets overlooked. You can get a Napa rebuild kit 2-1565 for about $30 or get just the bowl cover gasket for much less by going to OME and looking up the reference to about a $6.00 price for the gasket only. Maybe someone else will remember the entry. Myself I would take my plastic priming bottle and squirt a little fuel in the carburetor throat and see if it starts. You really have to make sure every passage is cleared when you "Rebuild" and that means fine wire and compressed air in my book. JB has good advice on the page regarding spark. |

You might want to replace the Zenith 61 series carbuerator with an aluminium bodied Zenith 68 series. You can get one from Moyer Marine, an aftermarket outfit for Atomic4s. If you are getting fuel then replace ignition items one at a time in this order: condenser. points. rotor. distributor cap. coil. Note that the coil sould be one that DOES NOT REQUIRE EXTERNAL BALLAST. If the ignition key switch is old, replace it with a new marine ignition switch from a marine store. When installing new switch make sure that the drain hole is pointed down when installing. After you get it running a good upgrade is to make some high performance street racing spark plug wires ( Accel, MSD or similiar ). |
