Hi.
I picked this up over the weekend at an auction. I know it has been highly modified but does anyone know what it is and what I need to make it more authentic?

Someone else might help you with a maker id. Meanwhile, the cooling hopper is not original - would have been once through and there might have been a pump and drive on the back feeding water into the cylinder and then out at the top. The fuel tank is not original - I can't see a vaporiser and no carby seems to have been fitted. Not so important as these engines were full power or stopped. There would have been a thrust race and a drive flange on the back. Also the spark mechanism is missing - possibly something is behind the flywheel. The exhaust pipe probably was a horizontal pipe with cooling water injection. Look like the engine was set up to run for display or for some duty other than a boat. |

Keith, best guess is a Detroit, also check Termatt & Monihan, American, Caille. You'll need a water pump, eccentric coupling, and connecting strap. The exhaust is a box manifold, most are bad or missing, can be fabbed or have one cast, we probably have a sample depending on HP. These were a popular engine down here, good running and dependable. |
