There should be a law that puts individuals in jail for thirty years for inundating a site like this with trash like "free Swinger" has done. I would think there are plenty of other sites out there for perverted people and they wouldn't need to mess with this one. Andrew, I would be in favor of not allowing unregistered people to post, without going thru you or some other filter.

Keith,

Thanks. I'll post more about this later, but it has been a real pain. That "person" (not really a person, but an automated process) posted about 400 messages before I stopped it.

We've got two choices in the short term.

One is for me to set the board so that unregistered users messages don't get posted right away, they will go into a que for me to review.

The second is to activate a thing called CAPTCHA which is one of the distorted images with numbers that requires you to type in the numbers that you see in the image. They are impossible to read except by a real person. It would only apply to unregisterd users. Registered users would post as they do now.

The second option is what I prefer because it requires less management by me and because valid posts by un-registered users will get posted right away, but it's a little harder to install. I have most of what I need to make it work, but not all.

I will probably implement the first option now and they try to get the CAPTCHA working over the next couple of weeks.

Andrew, I have always assumed that you volunteer your time to keep this site up, and, it sounds like you might be supplying the software and hardware out of pocket as well. If that is the case, I certainly would like to contribute towards your expenses as I get considerable enjoyment and knowledge from this site.

Searcher,

I appreciate the offer. I do supply all the hardware, software, etc for this site, but it isn't very expensive because I sort of piggyback on the commercial site I have, MarineEngine.com.

We are on the same dedicated server as MarineEngine.com and this discussion board is the same as the one we use on MarineEngine.com.

I enjoy doing it (except for the occassional spammer issues). If I need contributions at some point I will post something here requesting it.

Thanks again.

PS. I will try to delete the remaining spam postings from here tomorrow.

And, if you use AOL please don't click the "this is spam" link in your email program relative to the email notifications of the spam postings on the board. Since that email comes from our domain it could cause AOL to list us as a spammer.

Andrew,
I would say make it that you have to be a member to post on the board. I don't think we have that many visitors that post anyway. The other big old engine board is set so you have to be a member to post on it.
In this day with this kind of BS I don't think anyone would be affended.
Also the CAPTCHA software sounds good too.
Just me thoughts
Ernie

Thanks Ernie and Peter,

What I have done for the time being is changed the posting process so that a post from a non-registered user will go into a que for my review. There is a notice at the time of the posting that advises the user. The posting process will be unchanged for registered users.

Ernie is right that most of the users here are registered, but I would like to provide an option for visitors if possible. I think that some users post first as a visitor and then register, and some people only have one question and are reluctant to register to post that one question.

I think the CAPTCHA feature will be the best solution, but I have a bit of research to do to make it functional.

Thanks.
